NBA Insider Reveals Lakers’ Chances Of Hiring Tyronn Lue
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Following the dismissal of head coach Darvin Ham after a disappointing NBA playoff exit, the Los Angeles Lakers are actively searching for a leader who can revitalize the team and capitalize on the LeBron JamesAnthony Davis era.

Among the speculated candidates, Tyronn Lue of the LA Clippers has been a notable mention; however, his prospects of rejoining the Lakers seem dim.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski provided insights into Lue’s current situation with the Clippers.

“Ty Lue still has a year left on his contract. And the Clippers are determined to do a long-term deal with Ty Lue,” Wojnarowski reported.

Wojnarowski further emphasized the Clippers’ intentions to retain their head coach, “They want him to be their coach for a very long time.”

The Lakers’ previous interest in Lue during their 2019 coaching search, which instead resulted in hiring Frank Vogel, highlights his enduring appeal.

Lue, who has a history with the Lakers as a player and coach, was previously offered the head coaching job, but contractual disagreements prevented his appointment.

“They couldn’t come to terms on a deal,” Wojnarowski noted, referring to past negotiations that failed.

As the Lakers pivot from Lue, they are considering other accomplished coaches like Mike Budenholzer, formerly of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Kenny Atkinson, currently an assistant with the Golden State Warriors.

Both have proven track records and could potentially meet the Lakers’ needs for strategic acumen and locker-room leadership.

Wojnarowski points out that while the allure of big names is strong, the Lakers might also explore other successful coaches.

“It always isn’t going to necessarily be big game hunting when it comes to Laker head coaches,” Wojnarowski said.

As the search unfolds, the Lakers are expected to interview a wide range of candidates to ensure the next coach can fully leverage James’s and Davis’ talents. This offseason will be crucial for the Lakers as they aim to rebuild and return to their championship-contending form.
