Iconic film and TV homes (and where they are located)

Perhaps the best thing about some of the most iconic fictional homes and residences in television and movie history is that they actually exist in real life. In fact, plenty have turned fictional fame into a real-time financial windfall.

Here are some of our favorite fictional homes, and where they can be found.

Stratford residence, "10 Things I Hate About You"

Stratford residence, "10 Things I Hate About You"
Zillow

Location: 2715 N Junett Street, Tacoma, Wash.

The home of sisters Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) Statford, and their hilariously overprotective dad (Larry Miller) for this classic 1999 hit. In addition to being one of the better teen comedies of all time, 10 Things I Hate About You is also a very scenic movie. The oversized Stratford home, complete with a hot tub on the balcony, is located in North Tacoma. The famed partially circular front porch was the scene of the most poignant moment in the film between Kat and her dad.

Lutz house, "The Amityville Horror"

Lutz house, "The Amityville Horror"
American International Pictures

Location: 108 Ocean Ave (originally 112), Long Island, N.Y.

A supernatural horror thriller novel from 1977, inspired by an alleged murder of a family in this seemingly quaint Long Island house, led to a popular 1979 movie starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder as George and Kathy Lutz. From there, various versions, sequels and reboots of The Amityville story, which chronicles the young couple dealing with a haunted house, which is the true star of the show, have been made. The real-life house, meanwhile, has quite the story of its own, which included having to change its address to deter visitors.

Walsh residence, "Beverly Hills 90210"

Walsh residence, "Beverly Hills 90210"
Fox

Location: 1675 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena, Calif

Better known as "Casa Walsh." This was the Beverly Hills home of Brandon (Jason Priestley), Brenda (Shannen Doherty), Jim and Cindy. That rather wholesome family from Minnesota, whose move to glamorous Beverly Hills provided a safe haven for messed-up rich kids Dylan (Luke Perry), Steve (Ian Ziering) and Kelly (Jennie Garth). Sure, the garage is small, but that backyard basketball hoop was the site of some memorable father-son one-on-one moments. Though we were led to believe the Walsh house was within the city limits of Beverly Hills, the actual house is located unincorporated Altadena, just north of Pasadena.

Greg's house, "Bird Box"

Greg's house, "Bird Box"
People/YouTube

Location: 304 N Canyon Blvd, Monrovia, Calif

Sure, it seems the world is going to end, and pregnant Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock) needs a place to stay. That spacious safe house is a major part of the 2018 horror thriller that captivated a nation, and left people walking around with blindfolds. The house, located in the the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, drew obsessed fans from all over the world to catch a glimpse and pose for pictures outside the house, which was built in the 1900s and known for its cobblestone-aided stairs leading up to the front lawn.

Brady residence, "The Brady Bunch"

Brady residence, "The Brady Bunch"
HGTV/Instagram

Location: 11222 Dilling Street, Studio City, Calif.

Mike Brady (Robert Reed) was an architect, so it made sense the Brady's new blended family would live in a memorable house, from that stellar open-concept staircase — complete with a bannister that's easy to slide down — to Mike's state-of-the-art den (for the 1970s) to the master bathroom complete with a bath (a big deal for the time) to the artificial turf in the backyard. Any kid who was a fan of the comedy sitcom, which became legendary through syndication, wanted to live there. In later years, HGTV thought it was a good idea for the grown-up Brady kids (in real life) to get together and renovate the actual Southern California house featured in exterior shots with 2019's A Very Brady Renovation.

White family residence, "Breaking Bad"

White family residence, "Breaking Bad"
Fancy Pants Homes

Location: 3828 Piermont Dr. NE, Albuquerque, N..M

Yes, there really were people who would stop by the Albuquerque home — which is not located at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane — where Walter (Bryan Cranston), Skyler (Anna Gunn), Walter Jr. and Holly lived, and throw pizzas on the roof. Of course, the actual residents who lived in the house weren't too pleased. Then again, Breaking Bad had that kind of loyal viewership that made it one of the most popular television series of all time. Now, only if the RV was still around for obsessive fans to check out.

The Parker residence, "A Christmas Story"

The Parker residence, "A Christmas Story"
A Christmas Story House & Museum

Location: 3159 W 11th St., Cleveland, Ohio

Ralphie's childhood home from this beloved 1983 classic holiday comedy was set in Northwest Indiana, where the movie's narrator and co-writer Jean Shepherd grew up. Who can forget the leg lamp, the backyard where Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) literally almost shot his eye out, or the annoying neighbor Bumpus' hounds? The fictional location of the house was on Cleveland street, a nod to the actual site of the home, which has been turned into a popular tourist attraction, where overnight stays are available. Apparently, the residence is still for sale.

Southfork Ranch, "Dallas"

Southfork Ranch, "Dallas"
CBS

Location: 3700 Hogge Dr, Parker, Texas

One it comes to 1970s and '80s network dramas, there weren't too many hotter than Dallas. At the center of it all was the iconic Southfork Ranch, home to the Ewing family. J.R. (Larry Hagman), Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and the whole gang, which made it famous, Now, those exterior shots of the house (from 1979-'89) were that of the spacious ranch mansion known as Duncan Acres, located in northeast suburban Dallas. The ranch was also featured in various Dallas one-offs, as well as the series reboot from 2012-14. Currently, the ranch is a major tourist attraction, complete with a convention center.

Downton Abbey, "Downtown Abbey"

Downton Abbey, "Downtown Abbey"
highclerecastle.co.uk

Location: Highclere Castle, Newbury, England RG20 9RN

The Crawley family residence (or at least some of them) is certainly breathtaking from the exterior shots during the run of the ridiculously popular drama series, which ran from 2010-15. It's ever more impressive seeing it real life. Located in Highclere, Hampshire, fans of the show can get their Downton Abbey fix and pretend to live like a Crawley, at least for a couple of hours or so. Even for the few who are unfamiliar with the series, word is the real-life experience of Highclere is bucket list-worthy.

Cameron Frye's house, "Ferris Buehler's Day Off"

Cameron Frye's house, "Ferris Buehler's Day Off"
Paramount Pictures

Location: 370 Beech Street, Highland Park, Ill.

Cameron (Alan Ruck) got revenge on his absentee father when the old man's prized 1961 Ferrari 250 GT went flying through the window of his legendary glass garage. From a scenic standpoint, Cameron's family home, or the garage more specifically, is a piece of iconography amid an icon film. According to Nine.com, the original owner of the home, located on Chicago's suburban North Shore, Ben Rose, was a huge car buff, and the home' architect, David Haid, designed the famous garage — or automobile pavilion.

Banks mansion, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"

Banks mansion, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"
YouTube

Location: 251 N Bristol Ave, Los Angeles, Calif.

Will Smith went from West Philadelphia to ritzy Bel-Air to live with Uncle Phil and the family. Talk about a step up in life for a teenager. It seemed like your garden variety mansion: spacious, well-attended, and with something for everybody. However, with the cast of characters, like cousin Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) and butler Jeffrey (Joseph Marcell), it seemed like a good time. There is plenty to do there, as well. That kitchen is huge. And, while the show was set in Bel-Air, the actual home is located in nearby Brentwood. There was even a time when fans could stay at the real-life mansion.

Tanner residence, "Full House;" "Fuller House"

Tanner residence, "Full House;" "Fuller House"
Fancy Pants Homes/Google Maps

Location: 1709 Broderick Street, San Francisco, Calif

A consistent feature during the beloved Full House series, then also decades later on Netflix's Fuller House, the home of Danny (Bob Saget), his three daughters, Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey (Dave Coulier) — then eventually Becky and twins — was like another character. The Victorian exterior is recognizable to any fan of 1980s, early '90s sitcoms. Or should be. In reality, the house is found in the same San Francisco district were the show was set — in the Western Addition neighborhood as one of Alamo Square Park's famous 'Painted Ladies'. However, the real interior looks nothing like what the Tanner's and Co. lived amid.

McCallister House, "Home Alone;" "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York"

McCallister House, "Home Alone;" "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York"
Sarah Crowley; NBC5 Chicago

Location: 671 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, Ill.

Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) made being stranded at home seem like a lot of fun. Talk about a home-field advantage when it comes to thwarting a burglary. Fitting with the script, the "Home Alone House," as it has affectionately been dubbed (and even described on Google Maps), is located in the Chicago suburbs, once again on the prestigious North Shore. For years since the original movie was released in 1990, the real-life house has been consistent tourist attraction — like most other places on this list.

Hillard residence, "Mrs. Doubtfire"

Hillard residence, "Mrs. Doubtfire"
sfgate.com

Location: 2640 Steiner St, San Francisco, Calif.

Back to San Francisco for another memorable residence. The turreted Victorian, also located on the Pacific Heights neighborhood, played a major role in one of Robin Williams' most popular films. Now, the real-life home likely doesn't have a male housekeeper dressing like a woman inside, but that's OK. The four-bedroom home was built in 1893, and tends to draw plenty of admirers and longtime fans of the movie. Back in 2016, the house was on the market for a reported $4.45 million.

Byrde residence, "Ozark"

Byrde residence, "Ozark"
Netflix

Location: 6818 Gaines Ferry Road, Flowery Branch, Ga.

If one plans to set up a money laundering ring for a Mexican drug cartel, then the Ozarks, in Missouri, seem like the right place to keep it on the down low. Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) hate quite the racket going during the run of his the uber-popular Netflix drama that ran from 2017-'22. And, like others on this list, the home is an integral part of the story. When it comes to the true location of this 2,500-plus-square foot lake property, one would need to head to northern Georgia.

Tony Montana's mansion, "Scarface"

Tony Montana's mansion, "Scarface"
Village Properties

Location:  631 Para Grande Ln, Montecito, Calif.

Once we get past the fact that Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is one of the most smug, evil and ruthless bad guys in the history of film, it's certainly worth praising his personal accommodations. When it comes to overall beauty, it's hard to beat this 11,000-plus-square foot gem, complete with pristine pools and a Persian-theme garden. Not to mention, the elevated terraces and magnificent outdoor walkway. And, while the film is set in Miami, the actual estate (known El Fureidis) is located in Santa Barbara County, California. In 2022, it was on the market for a hefty $39,995,000.

Stratton mansion, "Silver Spoons"
YouTube

Location: Compton Wynyates,  Warwickshire, England

Any kid who grew up during the 1980s watching this popular NBC sitcom wanted to live the amusement park-like home of the Strattons. Authentic, life-size arcade games (like Pac-Man) and a child-sized, ridable freight train running through the house of Edward Stratton III (Joel Higgins), a successful owner of a toy business, who also happens to be a kid at heart. Then becomes a father when he finds out his week-long marriage years ago produced a teenage son, Rick (Ricky Schroder). While the show is set in America, the exterior shot of the mansion is that of Compton Wynyates, a brick Tudor-era mansion located in England.

Baldwin floating residence, "Sleepless in Seattle"

Baldwin floating residence, "Sleepless in Seattle"
KING 5 Seattle/YouTube

Widower Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and 8-year-old son Jonah (Ros Malinger) are trying to start a new life in the wake of death of their wife and mother to cancer. In this Norah Ephron classic comedy-drama from 1993, Seattle seems like the right place to be for the grieving pair. And, the Baldwin's famed floating residence (not a houseboat, which, according to Realogics Sotheby's Internatioal Reality, needs a motor) is another star of the movie. In real life, the houseboat is located in the northern part of the city, on Lake Union. Talk about unique living.

Eatenton residence "Steel Magnolias"

Eatenton residence "Steel Magnolias"
Steel Magnolia House

Location: 320 Jefferson Street, Natchitoches, La.

Built in the 1840s, the Southern comfort and charm oozes from just looking at photos of the home of Eatenton family's house. M'Lynn (Sally Field), Drum (Tom Skerritt), Shelby (Julia Roberts), etc. So many memories. These days, however, the house is not a family residence, but still exudes plenty of charm as a popular bed and breakfast. Steel Magnolia House Bed & Breakfast has been in business since 2014, and is a popular attraction for all types of visitors, not just fans of the lauded 1989 comedy-drama that won the Golden Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.

Cullen House, "Twilight"

Cullen House, "Twilight"
twilightgirlportland.com

Location: 3333 NW Quimby, St, Portland, Ore.

The film version of Twilight (2008) was larger-than-life in many ways. And, when we're looking for a place to house vampires that essentially live for forever, their residence must be pretty special. The Cullen House is one of the most uniquely modern homes on this list, just like its inhabitants. Though the Cullens live in the small town of Forks, Wash., the actual home is located in the Pacific Northwest, but in Portland. And, even before it was part of Twilight lore, it received plenty of raves.
